Potret Media terhadap Pemimpin Perempuan di Sektor Keuangan: Studi Kasus Menteri Keuangan Sri Mulyani Indrawati
The financial sector is known as a male-dominated sector. Assumptions in the society arise, defining that a career in finance isn?t exactly made for women, which is reflected in the low percentage of women in the sector. The existence of Sri Mulyani Indrawati (SMI), as a woman who holds the highest political position in the financial industry, is expected to eliminate this negative perception towards the position of women in the financial sector. SMI receives wide attention in the media, which plays an important role in people's lives as a source of knowledge, attitudes, and ideology (Van Dijk, 2000). However, no research is found that has systematically examined how the media construct SMI leadership. This study explores the construction made by the media towards SMI. The research aims to explore the meaning of these constructions through the meanings generated. The research is conducted through a thematic analysis of 268 articles collected through the Factiva database and new media podcasts. The result of the study shows there are still gaps in the representation of women leaders and men leaders in the media, due to gender stereotypes found in the representation, although recognition of relevant matters related to leadership has already been made. Furthermore, findings also show that the construction of SMI leadership is influenced by the concept of Orientalism: that superior leadership is affiliated with Western institutions.Ada Tabel
