Text
This research brief highlights the detrimental effects of laissez-faire leadership, where managers neglect their supervisory roles, leading to role ambiguity, conflict, and heightened interpersonal tensions among employees. A study by Skogstad et al. (2007) reveals that such leadership fosters psychological distress and creates fertile ground for workplace bullying, as employees struggle with unclear expectations and unresolved disputes. The absence of leadership exacerbates organizational chaos, leaving employees feeling powerless and vulnerable to abuse. Additionally, ethnographic research by Hodson et al. underscores how poorly structured environments amplify bullying, whereas structural bureaucracy mitigates it. The findings challenge the notion that laissez-faire leadership is benign, instead framing it as a destructive leadership style that undermines employee well-being and productivity. Organizations must address these gaps by ensuring active managerial engagement to prevent workplace dysfunction.
