Managing "open" employees: do resources and leadership style matter?

Santora, Joseph C. - ;

The article explores the relationship between employees' "openness to experience" (creativity, innovation, and self-direction) and their organizational commitment, examining how workplace resources and leadership styles influence this dynamic. Research by Moss et al. reveals that employees high in openness thrive with ample resources and transformational leadership, which fosters intellectual stimulation and motivation. Conversely, resource scarcity and transactional or laissez-faire leadership weaken their commitment. A secondary discussion on leadership assertiveness suggests that moderate assertiveness balances social and instrumental outcomes, while extremes (passivity or hostility) harm effectiveness.
