Text
Approximately 18% of men and 16% of women in a surveyed workforce exhibited at least one personality disorder, with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) being the most prevalent (9%). Employees with OCD, paranoid, or antisocial personality disorders often face challenges such as conflicts with coworkers, higher likelihood of termination, and reduced productivity. Surprisingly, individuals with OCD were found to experience more workplace conflicts than those with antisocial personalities, as the latter may manipulate others more effectively. The article emphasizes the need for managers to distinguish between employees requiring interpersonal skill development and those needing mental health support. Recommendations include raising awareness about personality disorders, training Employee Assistance Program (EAP) personnel to address these issues, and providing support mechanisms like online groups for affected coworkers. By understanding these disorders, managers can implement targeted interventions to mitigate workplace dysfunction and foster healthier team environments. The research underscores the importance of further studies to include additional personality disorders and develop clear guidelines for managerial action.
