Text
Analyzing 11 years of data from Wisconsin retirees, the authors identify key determinants of psychological well-being in retirement. Goal-directed behavior and good personal health were universally beneficial, enhancing well-being for both genders. However, gender-specific patterns emerged: women benefited more from strong social networks (closeness to spouses and extensive social contacts), while men relied more on financial security for post-retirement happiness. The study underscores the need for tailored retirement preparation programs. For women, fostering social connections is critical, while men may require financial planning support. Additionally, addressing work-life spillover effects, particularly for men transitioning from fulfilling careers, could mitigate post-retirement distress.
