Do happy leaders make for better team performance?

Santora, Joseph C. - ; Esposito, Mark - ;

Leaders' positive moods significantly enhance team performance through two key mechanisms: (1) fostering transformational leadership behaviors (e.g., inspiration, individualized consideration) and (2) cultivating a positive group affective tone (shared emotional climate). These factors, in turn, boost team goal commitment, satisfaction, and helping behaviors, ultimately improving objective outcomes like sales commissions. The study highlights the importance of selecting leaders with traits like extraversion and conscientiousness, as well as training programs to amplify positive emotional expression. Limitations include the focus on sales teams and the need for future research on negative leader moods.
