What accounts for job satisfaction differences across countries?

Kostopoulos, Konstantinos C. - ; Bozionelos, Nikos - ;

The study distinguishes between micro-level (individual job characteristics), meso-level (workforce composition), and macro-level (institutional) explanations. Findings reveal that individual factors (e.g., job autonomy, pay, security) and workforce composition (e.g., proportion of professional/managerial roles, permanent contracts) account for nearly two-thirds of cross-national satisfaction differences, while institutional factors (e.g., average wages, unemployment rates) play a minor but contextual role. Notably, job satisfaction was lower in Eastern Europe and higher in Northern Europe, correlating with job quality and occupational class.
