An exploration of interaction effects in Indonesia regional economic development
This diss ertation pr esents four studies covering different areas of Indonesian r egio nal anal ys is with special attention to the interregional interaction . The first st udy examines the d eterminant s of the l ay-off proc ess that took place at the onset of the Indonesian economic crisis amo ng Java districts. It shows that the lay-off rate, i. e. , th e ratio of l ay-offs to the labor force, is n egative ly related to the economic growth rate and s hare of l abor in th e informal sect or; and is positively r el ated to the unemployment rate. This st udy also confirms the empirica l significance of spatial effects, s ugg esting th e existence of inte rr e gional spillover effect and thus implying some degr ee of district-lev el integration in th e lay-off process. The secon d st udy seeks th e d e terminants of output multipliers. As a demand-si d e analysis, a greater amount of final d emand expenditures is usually pr escri b e d to incr ease th e total production . This st udy offers a different p erspective by asking: is it possible to find economic variabl e s that may affect th e magnitude of the multipliers ? The application us es the 1 995 Indon es ian inte rr e gional input-output tabl e . Having a r egio nal dataset, spatial effects are taken into account by fitting a spatial d ependen ce model connecting output multipliers and variab les d erived from ex ogenous accounts in input-output framework. Three important findings stand out of this stud y. First, the importan ce of considering spa ti al effects in seeking the determinants of output multipliers is confirmed. Secondly, th e study r evea ls the significance of the primary input structure as determinants of the output multiplier. Thirdly, this study confirms the importance of the prop ensity to spend locally for the regional economy . The third essay proposes two exploratory, pattern finding, methodologies for an hi erarchically-structured regions: the hierarchical Dendrinos-Sonis model and the spatial shift-share analysis. The hierarchical Dendrinos-Sonis model is us ed to analyze the competit ion -complementarity patterns of regional development; examining whether the economic growth in one region brings in favorable impacts to that in others. The spatial shift-share extends the widely used, standard shift-share decomposition. In its spatial version, a region's growth is evaluated in terms of its neighbor's, rath er than in terms of that of the nation. An Indonesian application is presented in a context of spatial growth inequality. The fourth essay measures the degree of economic importance of Indonesian provinces by applying the extraction method within an interregional input-output analysis. The method hypothetically extracts a particular province, and analyzes output differenc es between the full-region and the hypothetical systems. Greater output differences correspond to a greater importance of that particular province in the interr egio nal system. Further, the study shows that the extraction impacts are positively correlated with the notion of interregional similarities Includes tables
