Export performance development of Indonesia's textile and apparel product : a comparative advantage study
The determinant factor of export performance in manufacturing industry has been an important theme in the study of industrial organization and industrial economics. There are vast theoretical debates and empirical works that attempt to answer the question of why countries trade each other and who is gained from the trade. Eventually, these studies has developed extensively that they encompass the classic absolute and comparative advantage, neo-classic HO theory until modern trade theory. By using descriptive and dynamic analysis (The Harmonic Mass Index) of revealed comparative advantage approach, this paper attempt to investigate the Indonesia?s textile and apparel product comparative advantage. The result suggests that the industry is in declining state of export performance, owing to the loss in their comparative advantage. The dynamic analysis shows that there is no structural change in comparative advantage after early 1990s, which marked as the peak of textile and apparel export competitiveness. Furthermore, there is lack of export specialization in this industry, since the commodity which has comparative advantage (disadvantage) remains in this initial condition during 1989-2010..
