Mencari Tanah Harapan di Indonesia: Migrasi Internal dan Mobilitas Ekonomi Antargenerasi
Someone’s initial background often becomes an obstacle to getting equal access and opportunity, as well as factors that drive inequalities which frequently passed down across generations. One way to "uplift" or the occurrence of intergenerational mobility is by migration. Using data from the Indonesia Family Life Survey (IFLS) and the Unconditional Quantile Regression (UQR) method, this study aims to observe the effect of internal migration and geographical area selection on intergenerational economic mobility in each expenditure distribution group in Indonesia. It is found that there is high relative mobility in Indonesia, which reflects the children’s success to "uplift" higher economic ladder than their parents. The UQR estimation results showed the internal migration factor has a significant effect on the bottom quintile distribution of expenditures (10th and 30th percentile) and for the migration to big cities and small cities factors as well as migration to Java Island factors have a significant effect on the lowest quintile distribution of expenditures (10th percentile). It was also found that the intergenerational elasticity (IGE) was between 0.105 to 0.190 with a U-shaped curve relationship between the parents and children’s expenditure rank, with higher mobility occurring in the lowest and top quintiles of distribution and lower mobility occurring in the middle quintile of distribution, which indicates middle income trap phenomenon in Indonesia..Ada Tabel
