As is often the way, the author got a lot of help. Everyone in Added Value and its clients over the years contributed to the thinking, the tools and the examples. My thanks to all of you but especially Peter (times two), Paul (times two), Janine, Charles, David (times two), Andy and Malcolm. In terms of the development of the material and the production, Emma Douglas and Nighat Bandey were my rock. Dave Evans added thick layers of polish to the writing and editing: I am eternally in his debt. Alan McWalter, James Hill, Keith Weed, Martin Glenn, Nick Fell and my dear friend and mentor, Andrew Seth were my inspiration for the ?stuff that gets in the way? of making good marketing work in business. They should know having got round the ?stuff? to deliver great marketing in their respective businesses. My wife was no help at all ? she obstinately refused to read any of the drafts claiming to have better things to do ? but she was very understanding and is inspirational and gorgeous in every other way. Sir Martin Sorrell and Graham Mackay, CEOs of WPP and SABMiller respectively, made it possible to get the time to write the book and to move back into a marketing director?s job to be hoisted by my own petard.
