Failsafe strategy: profit and grow from risks that others avoid
The central thesis of this book emerged from a gradual convergence of ideas from two sources. The first source is my research on risk and value creation. The second source is my consulting and executive development experience. Chance encounters have played a major role in some significant directions that I have taken in my life, and it is fair to say that had Michael Lubatkin not started the conversation in the late 1980s about looking at risk from a strategic perspective, I may never have been drawn into this stream of research on risk. I may have written a book on strategy, but that would not have been half as interesting to me as the risk management lens of strategy. Although the notion of risk provides the architecture, the bulk of the concepts relating to designing and implementing strategy have come from trying out these ideas on my executive audience and corporate clients. These are the people who have shaped the ideas to the point where I was willing to try and put it into practice. In particular, some people deserve my deepest gratitude. In no particular order xi xii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS they are Tom Sullivan, Arthur Anton, Larry Vandendriessche, Mike Butkovic, Lev Holubek, Kevin Blakely, Jim Karman, and Jack Harley. All of these people have given me some deep insight or helped me verbalize an idea that I was struggling with. For example, the notion of granularity that I develop throughout the book was an observation by Larry Vandendriessche in his effort to capture the basic essence of my methodology. I would also like to acknowledge conversations with my academic colleagues that have shaped my ideas over the years. In particular, I like to express my appreciation for the conversations that I have had with Vasu Ramanujam, John Aram, Jeane Liedtka, Jay Bourgeoise, Robert Wiseman, and Charles Baaden Fuller. Some of my students who have contributed to this project are Chris Wargo, Gary Wagner, and Baher Abdelmarek. Others have been cited in the book. The support of Jim Boyd, my executive editor, has been invaluable. I also appreciate the time Russ Hall took in making sense of my manuscript. As always, any errors and omissions are solely my responsibility. One final note: This is a single authored book. However, I have used the ?editorial we? in the book. Finally, I deeply appreciate the support from my wife and best friend, Anita, throughout this process. There were many discouragements, and her support was invaluable to keep me committed.
