Handbook of interview research : context and method
The Handbook of Interview Research is both an encyclopedia and a story. An encyclopedia is a text that ?circles? all aspects of its subject matter. We cannot promise that the Handbook is completely comprehensive regarding interviewing, because interviewing has far too rich and varied a history across the myriad disciplines in which it is practiced and across its professional applications to make that possible. Virtually all researchers and professionals who deal with people now make use of some form of interviewing. What we do promise is that this Handbook provides good coverage of the methodological issues now surrounding interview practice, including its varied forms, concerns centered on distinctive respondents, special institutional applications, technical matters related to data processing, analytic strategies, and representational questions. The Handbook is, indeed, quite a ?circle? of knowledge for what has become the method of choice for obtaining experiential information from individuals. The encyclopedically oriented reader has a distinct style of textual consultation. He or she moves directly to topics of interest. Someone about to organize a researchproject on early life, for example, might well consult only the chapter of the Handbook that discusses interviewing with children and adolescents. Someone else who is considering altering the kinds of interviewing he or she is conducting in professional practice might move directly to Part III, which focuses on how specific auspices orient to and complete the interviewing process. Such encyclopedic readings aim to capture information needed for specific purposes outside the text. For the reader?s convenience, the editors have added crossreferencing between chapters with this in mind. But the Handbook is also a story, which invites a different kind of reading. A story differs from an encyclopedia in that the story has a plot and theme of its own; it is something more than a compilation of ?state-of-the-art? knowledge. Those who consult a text encyclopedically typically aim to develop their own stories, utilizing the information that their consultation provides. The Handbook, unlike most encyclopedias, also spins a particular tale of interviewing, one that moves from the commonly recognized individual interview to what we call ?the interview society.? This is the gist of the Handbook?s opening chapter, but the theme resonates throughout. No longer should we regard the interview as simply an instrument of data gathering technology; it is also an integral part of society?now more decidedly than ever. That is the Handbook?s leading theme. The theme is articulated in different ways across the various chapters. The more technical chapters convey the message that the part that interviewing now plays in society operates with growing efficiency and sophistication. The more conceptual chapters provide glimpses of the ways interviewing permeates, and gives shape to, our experience and identities. We provide short introductions to the various parts into which the Handbook is divided to highlight the theme and relate it to more specific discussions. Although we would not advise a reader to consult most encyclopedias as stories in their own right, the Handbook does offer the added dimension of being framed by a general perspective on the interview within contemporary society. invite readers to approach the text with this orientation also in mind. Being both an encyclopedia and a story, the Handbook draws upon a vast reservoir of intellectual resources. We thank our many contributors on both counts. Each of them, in his or her own way, has furnished encyclopedic knowledge to us and to the reader, and has done so with consummate expertise and professionalism. The results are evident in the text.We also are grateful to the many contributors who offer food for thought regarding the leading theme in their chapters. This is our collective story, one that resonates throughout the volume. Our advisory editors have been unstintingly supportive. They not only provided leads to potential contributors, but alerted us to new developments and suggested ways of thinking alternatively about old ones.
