Successful dissertations and Theses : A Guide to Graduate student research from Proposal to Completion 2nd ed
A guide to writing dissertations and theses is presented that is primarily directed to doctoral and master's degree candidates but that may also be useful to the writer of scholarly papers, essays, and papers. Attention is directed to the following concerns: starting and completing the dissertation; working with the research adviser and advisory committee; selecting and shaping the research topic; preparing the research proposal; following basic research procedures; organizing, outlining, and writing; defending the thesis; adapting the thesis for publication and presentation; and using the library and locating essential resources. Some problems students have in completing the dissertation are identified, along with the important roles of the thesis adviser and advisory committee and ways to maintain productive contact. Specific procedures for developing and presenting an effective initial proposal are discussed that define the scope, limits, and thrust of the student's topic and provide direction for ensuing research and writing efforts. Eighteen examples of sound research questions are presented as well as two extensive sample proposals illustrating both a historical and an experimental approach. The illustrations show the kinds of information that should be included in the proposal and how the information should be assembled.
