To be or not to be [Happy]: the role of employee well-being

Wright, Thomas A. - ;

Employee well-being is crucial to effective management practice. This idea has been around for some time. In fact, by the late 1920s, the happy/productive worker thesis stated that workers who were "happy" with their work should have higher job performance and be less likely to turnover than those who weren't. Of late, research has supported these expectations. For example, bivariate correlations ranging from .30 to .50 have recently been established between employee well-being and job performance. Research investigatin the connection between well-being and employee retention appears to be equally promising. Indeed, employee well-being may eventurally prove to be a more robust predictor of whether employees decide to stay or leave their jobs than either job satisfaction or job commitment.Printed Journal
