Only you can create actionable knowledge
To be actionable, knowledge must go beyond being knowledge for its own sake, and it must lead to behavior change in the form of choice (guiding decisions) or implementation (guiding action). Academics "create knowledge" in two different ways. They create knowledge in a general sense with research and analyses; they create knowledge for individuals with their teaching. To enhance the action potential of the knowledge, it is necessary to change something in their research and analyses and in their teaching. There are many exciting examples of creating actionable knowledge in teaching that can serve as models. They range from small problem sets to extended experiences. The more extensive experiences range from simulations that provide practice fields where students can try out modes of behavior and decision making without risking dire consequences to internships and consulting arrangements where students get experience with actual organizational situations. A dozen practical steps academics can take to increase the creation of actionable knowledge are presented.Printed Journal
