Note: the knowledge-leveraging paradox: how to achieve scale without making knowledge imitable

Coff, Rusell W. - ; Coff, David C. - ; Eastvold, Roger - ;

Tacit knowledge, one of the most promising resources, is among the toughest to leverage. It is important because it is often inimitable. However, increasing its scale may require codification, which may make it imitable. We explore and illustrate an approach to applying information technologies to leverage scarce expertise without codifying or transferring knowledge. Such technology may allow individuals to further specialize and generate more tacit knowledge, preserving the strategic properties of knowledge while scaling up.Printed Journal
