Big organizations are unhealthy environments for human beings

Leavitt, Harold J. - ;

Prefatory Note: This essay is something of a confessional, a personal piece that has emerged from a recent near-epiphany. It hit me one day?for no obvious reason?that I have never been fond of large organizations (though some?by no means all?small organizations are quite lovable). Like many colleagues, I have researched big American and overseas organizations, consulted with them, tried to help humanize them, conducted courses and seminars for their people, taught here and abroad in business schools that prepared students to participate in them, and focused my professional life around them. Despite liking?indeed often bonding with?many of the people of big organizations, I now realize that I have long felt rather distanced from the institutions themselves, implicitly viewing them as unhealthy places for us humans, as flawed, erosive, imprisoning..Printed Journal
