the Value of personnel selection: reflections on some remarkable claims

Schmitt, Neal - ;

Meta-analyses and its application to validity generalization have transformed the field of personnel selection. Moreover, the theoretical advance provided by Le et al is important. Their analysis of the potential impact of these problems on the estimation of the validity and utility of tests is accurate. However, the assumptions they make about the existence of top down selection and the level of range restriction are not reflected in actual empirical data and may actually be very inconsistent with the reality of organizational functioning. Hence these estimates may be very much inflated. The efforts of Le et al to bring the very real contribution of selection to the attention of various constituencies is to be applauded, but the use of exaggerated and unfounded claims will have the opposite long term effect.Printed Journal
