Economic distance and the survival of foreign direct investments
From the perspectives of resource exploitation versus exploration, we argue that hazard rates of foreign direct investments will be lower in more developed and less developed countries than in countries of similar economic development as the home country. We obtained strong supporting evidence based on a sample of foreign direct investments made by Singapore firms. Using the reasoning of strategic coalignment, we argue that acquisitions will have lower hazard rates than greenfield investments in more developed countries and vice versa in less developed countries. We found supporting evidence for the former but not the latter..Printed journal
