Viewing diversity through different lenses: avoiding a few blind spots
Diversity has been the focus of countless academic and practitioner articles in the 20 years since the Hudson Institute's publication of Workforce 2000 (Johnson & Packer, 1987). Making the Difference: Applying a Logic of Diversity by Scott Page presents a different twist on the benefits of diversity. In it, Page documents how diverse perspectives produce benefits by constructing models of diverse problem solvers and diverse predictors, attempting to show that when making predictions, diversity is as important as ability, and when solving problems, diversity often trumps ability. We consider Page's novel view of the logic of diversity, asking how well his arguments contribute to the diversity literature and to our understanding of how diversity can improve performance. We first highlight what is already understood about the effects of diversity on performance, emphasizing some of the similarities and differences between extant literature and Page's ideas. We then focus on a few specific points in Page's arguments, particularly three of his recommendations for ways to implement the theorems he proposes. We conclude with some suggestions regarding where this logic could be strengthened..Printed Journal
