No Longer a stepchild: how the management field can come into its own
The management field has been on a 50-year quest for academic legitimacy. The preferred route, prompted by the encouragement of the Ford Foundation, has been the adoption of a discipline-based model for the training and promotion of faculty, with its weaponry of choice being the production of contributions to high-prestige academic journals. Borrowing from the older and better-established arts and sciences fields has helped management research to don a mantle of academic credibility. However, this method of attaining legitimacy has also created the risk that management will not establish a powerful claim to an independent position as a mature field. Such a lack of legitimacy would reinforce a system in which faculty are trained and oriented toward the older disciplines and are more attracted to the research traditions of those disciplines than to interdisciplinary issues or the problems of real managers..Printed journal
