The impact of ASEAN's intra trade to FDI inflows from non-member states : The case of Indonesia, Malaysia & Thailand 1987-2006

Verico, Kiki - ;

A number of previous studies have proven that imported capital investment represented by FDI (Foreign Direct Investment) has a positive impact on international trade, particularly exports. This is seen in the classic production model in which export is the output and FDI is the input of capital (K). Meanwhile other studies have shown there is a production network between neighboring countries in Southeast Asia such as Japan and China. This article extrapolates from these two sets of studies. The first set of studies proves that FDI inflow affects international trade, and this article shows that, likewise,trade affects FDI inflow. Further, the second set of studies argues that the production network in Southeast Asia was established by outside forces, and this article examines the different modes of domestic forces in establishing production networks. The article limits its observations to Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand from 1987-2006. Analysis of government action on trade-FDI relation has also been limited to the regional (ASEAN agreements : AFTA, AICO & AIA) and national levels (FDI inflow incentives in each country). .Baca di tempat
