The Multiunit enterprise

Garvin, David A. - ; Levesque, Lynne C. - ;

A multiunit enterprise a geographically dispersed organization built from standard units such as branches, service centers, hotels, restaurants, and stores, which are aggregated into larger geographic groupings such as districts, regions, and divisions. Multiunit enterprises have become the norm in several industries, such as apparel, banking services, consumer electronics, food and drug stores, general merchandise, hospitality, hardware, mail and package delivery, and toys and sporting goods. In this article, the authors discuss the unique issues that multiunit corporations face, describe how managers tackle them, and draw some lessons from the research that will help managers at all kinds of organizations execute strategy. The key findings: multiunit enterprises employ four levels of field managers with carefully defined responsibilities and use five organizational-design principles to implement strategy effectively..Printed journal
