Constructive controversy for management education: developing committed, open-minded researchers

Tjosvold. Dean - ;

Controversy drives research progress as scientists challenge and improve upon each other's work. Instructors and students express opposing perspectives as they explore ideas and cases. But differences of opinion themselves do not promote understanding and learning; controversy must be well managed to be constructive. Conflict and controversy should be clearly distinguished from competition defined as incompatible goals. Several researchers have found that the discussion of conflict can facilitate solving a variety of organizational problems. In addition, studies also document that controversy promotes individual learning. Constructive controversy requires the direct, open-minded discussion of opposing views by all participants, their working to understand each other's position and reasoning, and integrating their ideas to develop each other's perspectives..Printed journal
