Skills for work in the 21st century: what does the research tell us?
Concerns about increasing polarization of skill requirements in the United States (jobs requiring higher skills on one end and jobs requiring lower skills on the other) and the resulting wage disparities have led many in the government and private sector to call for increased research into the trend. In 2006, the National Institutes of Health and the Russell Sage Foundation asked the Center for Education of the National Academies to conduct a workshop on research evidence related to future skill demands. The resulting workshop, which took place in Washington, DC, May 30 through June 1, 2007, brought together researchers from various disciplines: psychology, sociology, political science, and business. Here we provide an overview of the research presented as well as a glimpse into the areas that are still very much up for debate..Printed journal
