Introduction: knowledge, learning, and impact
The question of how best to promote, measure, and reward knowledge creation and scholarly impact is one that plagues every business school dean, department chair, and promotion/tenure committee. Yet, according to the authors of this first Exemplary Contribution of 2009, the systems and mechanisms people rely upon for making these judgments are fundamentally flawed. Nancy Adler and Anne-Wil Harzing begin by documenting the rapid and extensive proliferation of ranking and ratings in academe broadly and business schools in particular. In addition, they call for a field-level institutional transformation emphasizing improvement of individual ranking systems, supporting research that matters, and reclaiming the fundamental role of scholarship. This contribution builds on and extends a series of loosely related critiques that have been offered in AMLE since the journal's inception. The thoughtful contributions from a stellar group of scholars, administrators, and others presented in the Essays, Dialogues, & Interviews section provides a rich continuation and extension of this discussion..Printed journal
