Sizing up the tyranny of the ruler

Jain, Dipok C. - ; Golosinski, Matt - ;

Authors Nancy Adler and Anne-Wil Harzing raise many intriguing points, seeking as they do to establish more clarity about academic rankings. Concomitant with this investigation is their assertion that business schools and universities must return to their "fundamental purpose." In addition to their review of institutional rankings, Adler and Hazing lament what they see as numerous flaws associated with the individual metrics that influence faculty tenure and promotion. One important move in this direction is for school leaders to establish a culture of collaboration, one that spans disciplines within the institution. Even better, this collaboration should extend from the business school and across the entire university to find opportunities for broader partnerships. School administrators will have to take the lead in designing incentives that encourage fruitful research risk taking. A good starting point for improving the relevance of business faculty research is by bringing academics, and business students, closer to actual business practitioners and their challenges..Printed journal
