The Seductive power of academic journal rankings: challenges of searching for the otherwise

Nkomo, Stella M. - ;

People increased reliance on academic journal rankings to assess scholarship is quite evident. As a community, they have succumbed to the seductive power of academic journal rankings. Universities crave academics who publish in high-impact journals as a means to garner high institutional rankings. Universities and governments in various parts of the world also rely upon journal ranking systems to assess the quality and impact of research. What is most dismaying is those responsible for creating the system do not seem to be aware that many so-called high-impact international journals are not really international but remain stubbornly nationally oriented. The importance of journal impact may also encourage indiscriminate citation or erroneous use of references. Not only do journal ranking systems affect the behavior of researchers, they may also push journal editors and publishers to change their orientations, operations, and resource allocations to remain in or attain a higher tier status..Printed journal
