From journal rankings to making sense of the world

International research unequivocally demonstrates that men dominate the rank and file of the higher education sector. Despite on-going changes in the overall composition of the academic workforce with the inclusion of greater numbers of women and minority ethnic members, White men continue to dominate leadership and management positions, and disciplines of "hard" sciences in even greater proportions. Research is needed to examine the relationality of the context, the labor process, and the individual agency in the higher education sector in order to understand how the journal ranking system is connected to reproduction of inequalities in the sector. Meanwhile, people need to understand the stake that elite universities have in retaining narrow definitions of value and worth in scholarship. In order to go beyond hoping that meaningful scholarship may vail over the universities' flair for competitive ranking systems, there are a large number of strategies that they can collectively and individually adopt..Printed journal
