Academic rankings in research institutions: a case of skewed mind-sets and professional amnesia

Giacalone, Robert A. - ;

Why are institutions have succumbed to the rankings facade cannot be gleaned by simply focusing on the rankings problem alone, for it is the symptom of a rather skewed mind-set -- one where the only things that count are those that can be measured and the things people should ignore are those to which no reputational price tag can be affixed. In this skewed mind-set, rankings advance the view that financial or career credit is the primary goal. What drives the skewed mind-set emanates from a professional amnesia people have developed: They have forgotten that they are here to advance social understanding and well-being. So what authors Nancy Adler and Anne-Wil Harzing's article should leave them with is not simply a recognition of the problems with rankings, but a hope that at some point in the future, this recognition will help reject any method that reduces the dignity of a person's work to a number..Printed journal
