Assessing business scholarship: the difficulties in moving beyond the Rigor-Relevance paradigm trap
The author enters this dialogue regarding the challenges of scholarship assessment systems identified by authors Nancy Adler and Anne-Wil Harzing from the point of view of someone who has published in top-tier management journals and who is currently dean of the Sam M. Walton College of Business at the University of Arkansas. While the author certainly does not speak for other administrators, he has had experiences as a management department chairperson, an associate dean, and dean at a wide variety of business schools, ranging from primarily undergraduate-focused to doctoral-granting and research-intensive. Speaking of instruction, Adler and Harzing state that universities "subtly, and not-so-subtly, pressure professors to minimize their commitment to teaching" and to spend more time on research activities. From where the author sits, the directional flow is at least as strong coming from the other way. That is, their faculty profess that the most important support that they can provide them with is more time for them to focus on their research agendas..Printed journal
