Quality management and manufacturing performance: does success depend on firm culture?

Santora, Joseph C. - ;

Many experts believe that quality management practices should be "embedded" in or supported by firm culture. Yet recent findings from academic studies suggest that understanding of this is incomplete. In their comprehensive study about the role of culture and management practices, Michael Naor (George Mason University), Susan Goldstein, Kevin Linderman, and Roger Schroeder (all from the University of Minnesota) initiated their research by conducting a thorough review of the literature. Naor and his colleagues found that organizational culture was positively related to infrastructure quality practices and that those practices, in turn, were positively related to manufacturing performance. Consequently, it seems clear that infrastructure quality practices such as management commitment and supplier relationships enhance manufacturing performance, with core quality practices playing little if any role..Printed journal
