What matters more in growth companies: the leader or the idea?
Investing in the stock market seems more like gambling for many investors these days. But the role of venture capitalists is to place bets on the companies they believe will emerge as winners in the marketplace. And that's where new research from Steven Kaplan (University of Chicago), Berk Sensoy (University of Southern California), and Per Stromberg (Swedish Institute for Financial Research) comes in. They sought to answer the question of whether the jockey (the leader) or the horse (the business idea) matters more when it comes to picking emerging companies that will break away from the pack. To test their ideas, Kaplan and his colleagues examined 50 companies that went public over a 15-year period, most of which had an initial public offering between 1998 and 2000. Kaplan and his colleagues have shown that while the founder's influence is important, it is not the "glue" that holds companies together and motivates employees to work for a common purpose..Printed journal
