Introduction: bridging divides
In her 2002 presidential address to the Academy of Management annual meeting, Jone Pearce asked the question, What Do We Know and How Do We Really Know It? (Pearce, 2004). The author remembers his presentation well because it was one of the first occasions in which the author had heard a senior scholar squarely address the persistent gulf between what people study and they teach. In her talk, Pearce suggested that many of them "inhabit two parallel intellectual worlds," the first of which represents their traditionally scholarly pursuits and the communities with which they interact in those pursuits, but the second one, much underappreciated in Pearce's view, is one of "folk wisdom about management and organizations." These two worlds -- and the divides between them -- have been a recurring theme in management scholarship and education, especially in the context of discussions about bridging theory and practice and making the author's research relevant to management learning and practice..Printed journal
