On the Dubious wisdom of expecting job satisfaction to correlate with performance

Fisher, Cynthia D. - ;

Previous research by organizational researchers on correlating job satisfaction to job performance has been unsuccessful. The reason for this failure is the complex relationship between attitude and behavior. Attitude theorists have recognized these complexities and have identified 3 concepts to consider in improving observed correlations. In the concept of consistency, a clear definition must be established as to what behavior is consistent with what attitude. A second concept is behavioral criteria, and the criteria for what type of behavior constitutes a positive or negative reaction must be defined. Generally, those criteria that require repeat observations are more reliable. The specificity of attitude measures must also be considered. The more specifically defined the question or attitude, the more reliable the results. Further research is necessary concerning the job satisfaction/job performance relationship using the 3 concepts, which may help clarify the inconsistent results of past studies.Hardcopy
