Gateway to business: an innovative approach to integrating writing into the first-year business curriculum

Cox, Pamela L. - ; Bobrowski, Paula E. - ; Spector, Margaret - ;

"Gateway to Business" was developed with the objective of integrating writing and critical thinking into the business curriculum while enhancing the first-year experience for business students. The focus of this article will be the course's approach to the integration of writing into the first-year experience. In addition to describing the format and objectives of the Gateway to Business course, writing plan, assignments, and assignment evaluation, this article describes the School of Business's overall writing plan and illustrate how business writing is introduced in the freshman year and then further developed as the student progresses through the business curriculum. This approach to integrating writing in a first-year business course has important implications for curriculum reform committees and department chairs considering approaches to improving writing within their disciplines. In addition, the assignments and grading rubrics provided in the appendices can be applied by individual instructors with the goal of improving writing within a single course..Hardcopy
