Hari Tua Akan Datang, Mampukah Aku Bertahan Sendiri? Status Ekonomi Ibu Tunggal di Indonesia

Three out of four single parents in Indonesia are single mothers. As the head of the household, single mothers will have a heavier burden than mothers in married households. Several studies have also found that female households are a vulnerable group to poverty. Using secondary data from the March 2021 National SocioEconomic Survey (Susenas), this study tries to find out the relationship between the marital status of the female household head and economic status through two measures, income to needs ratio and poverty status. This study uses two different estimation techniques, OLS and probit. The analysis was conducted on household heads who were married and divorced and at least 19 years old. The results of both estimates show that divorced women are more vulnerable to experiencing poverty than married households. The findings in this study can be used as recommendations for stakeholders in formulating policies regarding female household heads in Indonesia.
