Closing the Red-Light District: Unveiling the Hidden Impacts of Surabaya's Prostitution Shutdown
Initiated primarily due to concerns related to human trafficking and moral issues, there is a notable paucity of empirical data regarding the local economic impacts of these closures. Employing a difference-in-differences methodology that accounts for staggered shutdown timelines, the study finds that the overall economic impact of localisation in Surabaya is not statistically significant. However, it is noteworthy that during shutdown phase 1, localisations had a positive and statistically significant effect on local economic activities, a trend which subsided in later phases. Additionally, the application of spatial analysis techniques yielded more robust and significant results, highlighting the intricate and multifaceted economic implications associated with localisation policies.
