The Impact Of Covid-19 On Carbon Emissions: Empirical Evidence From China

Yanwei Lyu - ; You Wu - ; Wenqiang Wang - ; Jinning Zhang - ;

As the global COVID-19 rages around and world, economic uncertainty increases, and green and sustainable development is facing tough challenges. Based on a panel data of 30 Chinese provinces from January to December 2020, we investigate the short-term impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on China’s carbon emissions. The results indicate that carbon emissions in China decreased considerably during the COVID-19 outbreak. This finding remains robust after replacing the core variables. The negative impact of COVID-19 on China’s carbon emissions is not sustainable in the long run though. This
study provides valuable recommendations for China and other countries to achieve green economic recovery and reach climate goals in the post-epidemic era.
